Michael Feinstein brings 40 years of nonprofit leadership experience as both a senior executive and board member for community and national organizations. He partners with nonprofit leaders and boards to strengthen governance and strategy, guide leadership transitions, and assess organizational effectiveness – helping build resilient, high-performing organizations. As an executive coach, he works with leaders to navigate change and create more successful futures for themselves and their organizations.
Michael most recently served as Senior Executive Advisor at the JCC Association, counseling association leadership, CEOs/Executive Directors, and boards on complex strategic and operational challenges. He previously served as Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, where he strengthened internal operations and stakeholder support during an extended leadership transition, and earlier as Vice President for Strategic Initiatives, leading key initiatives and supporting affiliates through executive transitions.
Before joining JCC Association, Michael was Vice President at Capacity Partners, advising nonprofit organizations on board development, strategic planning, and organizational assessment, while coaching senior executives. He also served at the Bender JCC of Greater Washington, first as Chief Operating Officer for three years and then as Chief Executive Officer for 12 years. He established financial stability, drove 30% revenue growth, and led a major capital campaign and renovation at a 100-year-old organization. He worked closely with the board to shape its vision and strategic direction while leading a large professional staff.
Earlier in his career, Michael owned and managed businesses in the manufacturing, service, and technology industries, and served in a variety of volunteer leadership roles in nonprofit organizations.
Michael is a Standards for Excellence Licensed Consultant and holds certificates in Nonprofit Board Consulting from BoardSource and Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University’s Center for Professional Development. He earned a bachelor’s degree in public policy from Duke University and an MBA, with concentrations in finance and public/nonprofit management, from Columbia University. He is also a regular guest lecturer on strategic planning at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy.
Michael lives in Rockville, Maryland, with his wife, Suzanne; together they have four children.
