Shelly L. Gardeniers is an independent consultant specializing in nonprofit board governance and strategic planning. Shelly draws on her diversity of experience to guide board members in structuring strategic discussions and in achieving continual improvements to their governance practices. Her clients include (inter)national nonprofits, membership organizations and trade associations, as well as philanthropic organizations. During her career in the US, UK and the Netherlands, Shelly has filled key roles in a number of industries, working with board members and senior management to implement change and/or improve on-going processes. Prior to starting her own firm, she held corporate positions with Royal Ahold, Rabobank and Sara Lee International. A US and Dutch citizen, Shelly is a Standards For Excellence Licensed Consultant and a BoardSource Certified Governance Trainer. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University. Shelly has served on the Board of Directors of both regional and national organizations and, in October 2016, was appointed by the Governor of Maryland to serve on the Maryland Public Broadcasting Commission. She is a member of the Leadership Maryland Class of 2014.
