Marla has 30+ years of experience working with organizations of all types and sizes on board structures, practices, and behaviors. Marla has been affiliated with BoardSource since 1998 in various roles, from consultant and trainer to program and project manager. She was responsible for Leading with Intent: A National Index of Nonprofit Board Practices, The Source: 12 Principles of Governance That Power Exceptional Boards, and the research project that resulted in Governance as Leadership.
She is author of Effective Orchestra Governance Second Edition published by the League of American Orchestras. She is also the primary author of Principles of Trusteeship: How to Become a Highly Effective Board Member and co-author of Assessing Board Performance, both published by the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. Previously, Marla was an acquisitions editor at John Wiley & Sons.
Marla holds a BA in English from Amherst College, MBA and Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Case Western Reserve University. She is a past board chair of Maryland Nonprofits and a past board member Calvary Women’s Services.
