Elizabeth Scott Shatto

Elizabeth (Liz) Scott Shatto is the Executive Director of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area, Inc.  As such, she provides mission-driven technical assistance to nonprofit and government units in mid-Maryland and facilitates grant funding through the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority.  She fosters networks and partnerships among diverse communities and organizations. Additionally, she serves as a peer reviewer for the American Alliance of Museums’ Museum Assessment Program.  Liz has worked on behalf of history and art museums, historic sites and heritage tourism for many years, in her hometown of Frederick Maryland, and in Savannah, Georgia and Washington, D.C.  She holds a Master of Arts degree from George Washington University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Converse College. In 2012 she was selected to join the History Leadership Institute (then called "Developing History Leaders @ SHA" the Seminar for Historical Administration”). That year, she received the Maryland Preservation Award for Outstanding Individual Leadership at the Local Level.  Her background includes extensive experience in leadership with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, various church leadership roles, involvement as a volunteer and, later, Board President for the Rape Crisis Center in Savannah, and most recently, participation in “Race and #Real Talk,” a music-based program ringing together people from a wide variety of backgrounds to explore, discuss and openly embrace the challenges many people of color face as they navigate their communities.
